Excerpt from THE SHADOW OF MUDFLAP:

     “Hey, there. You look good enough to eat,” he growled. He glanced back at his Bronco. “Unfortunately, Derek is waiting for us in the car so I can’t take a nibble.”

     A frisson of awareness skated down her spine. That tone in his voice…yummy.

     “Thanks,” she said as she leaned up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
     “You know how to make a girl feel good.” She lingered for a moment right below his ear to whisper, “You look pretty damn good yourself. But it’s hot and we don’t want the poor thing to suffer from heat exhaustion. I’m confused though.” She glanced at him as they walked out toward his truck.
     “Why would you bring your dog golfing? Are they even allowed on the course?”

     He pulled her door open for her, but stalled her entrance into the Bronco. “Dog? I don’t have a dog.”

     She sat in the seat, but scowled at him in confusion through the still open door. “Isn’t Derek your dog?”

     Mudflap burst out laughing as he shut her car door. But it was the outraged, “What the hell did he tell you to make you think that?” coming from the backseat that told her she’d gotten something wrong.

     She turned slowly to him. He was a young, clean cut, extremely good looking guy, who was not happy right now. He looked like a model from a young, hip magazine ad; well, he would if he wasn’t scowling.

     Wincing, she offered her hand to him. “I guess you’re Derek, huh?”

     Mudflap got into the car and continued to laugh at Derek’s expense. Derek shoved at his shoulder and muttered, “Asshole,” before offering her his hand. “Yes, I’m Derek. It’s nice to meet you Shanae.” His scowl quickly morphed into a flirty smile. “Already I can tell you’re too good for this guy. I say we dump him on the back nine and you and I can make a fun day of it without him.” He waggled his eyebrows at her.

     Uh oh, this guy and that mischievous smile was trouble. She couldn’t help the giggle that erupted. “Sorry about the dog comment. I misunderstood.”

     “Aw, sweetheart, no forgiveness is necessary. I know who to blame.” He turned to glare again at Mudflap. “Besides, gracing us with your beauty today more than makes up for it.”

     Shanae couldn’t help the eye-roll. This guy was digging it deep.

     “Hey, now. No horning in on my girl.” Mudflap frowned at Derek, but the corners of his mouth twitched with humor.

     The two guys continued the back and forth banter all the way to the golf course, renting their equipment, and meeting up with their golf pro for the day, a very attractive redhead named Lisa. Shanae clued in on the fact that Derek had a bit of a crush on her simply by the fact that he continued to give both Shanae and Mudflap a hard time, but then got stiff when it came to interacting with her. It was sweet, if not for the fact that Lisa seemed completely oblivious to Derek.

     Shanae would guess there was a pretty good age difference between the two. Derek was young, definitely early twenties, while Lisa was probably closer to thirty. Shanae doubted Lisa even saw Derek as a possibility for a date. She watched the two of them as Lisa corrected Derek’s form on the fourth hole. Lisa slid her hand down Derek’s arm to adjust his grip and Shanae could see all his muscles tighten in response.

    Mudflap slid in to stand behind her. His hand wrapped around her waist felt entirely too right, so right she completely forgot about Lisa and Derek. She could feel the heat coming off his body and her pulse skittered.

    But then Mudflap, who’d also been watching the other two, whispered in her ear, “I think his shaft is too big for that stroke.”

    Of course, Shanae worked with guys all the time so her gaze immediately landed on Derek’s crotch where his erection pressed against his pants.          

    “Don’t,” she hissed at Mudflap. “Don’t give him a hard time right now. Poor kid is infatuated and she isn’t even aware of him.”

    Mudflap nuzzled her ear for a moment before whispering, “Ask her for some help on the next hole and make her aware. He’s a good guy. It would be nice if he could hook up with a woman who might actually appreciate him.”

    And right there, Shanae’s heart melted a little bit more for this guy. Damn, sexy and sweet.

Life was good until it was time for him to go to the city for med school. He wanted her to go with him but his mother quickly intervened. Jules did what she believed was the best thing for the man she loved - she left.

Blake Fischer has never forgotten the girl he loved and lost. Left with only a note saying she was leaving and no explanation as to why, he’s now back in Brentsville and working as a doctor at the hospital. When he accepts a position as coordinator for a fundraising event, his heart is slammed hard when Jules Shaw, the woman he’s never stopped loving and never gotten over, turns out to be the caterer and project planner of the event.

Working together on the event throws these second chance lovers back into the sexual tension mix. Jules is terrified she’ll fall in love with Blake all over again and Blake wants to win her back, but first he needs answers and some honesty.

OUTSIDE THE LINES by Kimberly Kincaid is an excellent continuation of the series, and Blake and Jules are meant for each other. We met both these wonderful people in the second novella of the series, DRAWING THE LINE. Jules is Serenity’s best friend and second in command at Mac’s Diner and Blake is the handsome doctor that took care of Serenity after she was banged on the head by the bad guy.

I adore second chance romances and this one is exceptional. This couple fights their own desires, their own pasts, the memory of their happy past together that ended in heartache, while being cheered on by the greatest of characters – Blake’s cousin, Aaron. He is a hoot. Kimberly hooked me again with her spontaneity, her integration of food as a memory teaser and seduction tool, and the reinforcement that when two people are meant to be together even the wickedest of family can be convinced that it’s what’s meant to be. She even gave me some tearful moments - nothing like falling in love a second time.

I highly recommend OUTSIDE THE LINES by Kimberly Kincaid to everyone who has already read the first two novellas in this series as well as to anyone who hasn’t. If you love second chance romances, you will love OUTSIDE THE LINES by Kimberly Kincaid starring a generous and kind-hearted food connoisseur, and a sexy doctor who will have you thinking up reasons to visit an emergency room to see if there’s one available for you. Oh, and be sure to check out the yummy recipe at the end. To die for!

Unwrapping: Review of RUSH, a Phoenix Rising Novel by Joan Swan

If you’ve been reading my blog, and following my reviews, you probably already know what a huge fan of Joan Swan I am. I first fell in love with her writing when I won a copy of FEVER, book one in the Phoenix Rising series. I was so anxious to read it that I couldn’t wait for the copy to come from her so I bought it as soon as it released. I kept her signed copy and gave away my purchased copy here on the blog. I’ve read, no absorbed, everything she’s written since, so when she asked if I’d like to read an ARC of book three, RUSH, I jumped at the chance.

While Jessica questions whether she can have the life she thought she’d lost with this new Quaid, Q must find himself in the mix of who he was, what he has become, and what will be left of him in the end.

RUSH by Joan Swan is everything I expected it to be after reading the first two books, however, I did find the beginning a bit slow. Normally, when I read one of Joan’s books, I’m immediately caught up in the story and can’t put it down. RUSH was different. The beginning lacked the energy, the action, the excitement that I have come to expect but before long, it was all there. It took a few chapters but then I was completely hooked and soon I was reading late into the night.

Joan’s characters are intense, individual, and each one is important to the story being told. RUSH is no different in that respect. The team is together, working, laughing, teasing, and battling against the bad guys to protect not only Jessica but now Quaid, Cash and Mateo. Mitch has become an intricate part of the team as if he’s been with them from the beginning. I honestly didn’t feel I connected with Quaid and Jessica the way that I had with the other couples, but I still enjoyed their journey together to save themselves, their friends, and their love. There were some mighty steamy scenes between the two, filled with passion and angst as only Joan can give us. RUSH may not be the best of the series so far, but it is still a must read if you want to delve deeper into the world of the Phoenix Rising series.

RUSH, book three in the Phoenix Rising series by Joan Swan may not be the one to start with but it’s one you must read to learn even more secrets, and experience more adventure with these incredible characters that keep heating up the pages with their loyalty, their humor, and their steamy romances. I am still in love with this series and eagerly anticipating the next one. If you haven’t experienced this series yet, do so. Start with FEVER, you will be forever hooked by Joan Swan and her sexy, sexy good guy warriors.

We first meet Henry Guffald in book one of the Nelson's Tea Trilogy, DUKE BY DAY, ROGUE BY NIGHT by Katherine Bone but don't worry if you haven't read that one, you'll still enjoy THE ROGUE'S PRIZE. It works well as a stand alone.

I highly recommend THE ROGUE’S PRIZE by Katherine Bone to any, and all, readers who love a historical romance set on the high seas, pirates, and adventure that throws everyone into danger while keeping you turning the pages late into the night.

Unwrapping: Review of VAMPIRE THIRST by Ella J. Phoenix

On July 19^th, I reviewed DRAGON HEAT by Ella J. Phoenix and hopefully introduced you to a new and exciting paranormal series by a creative and innovative author. Well, I told you there was a second book and that I was going to read it and I did. Wow, is this series HOT and VAMPIRE THIRST burned up the pages as well as DRAGON HEAT did, if not more so.

While reading DRAGON HEAT, I fell into total crush mode over Hikuro. There was something about him that told me there was fire beneath that stoic face, and was I right. Sent to London by Tardieh, to check on the girls, and still drawn to Sam’s side, Hikuro tags along when she doesn’t want him to, much to her annoyance. She can’t seem to breathe when he’s around or think, for that matter. Her body heats up when she doesn’t want it to and her thoughts wander to his muscular body and fiery eyes on her – constantly.

In VAMPIRE THIRST by Ella J. Phoenix the reader is treated to more characters, including a sexy werewolf named Rafe who will surely be showing up to cause plenty of trouble for Yara in the next Dragon Heat series installment, and more plotline to lead us further into the mystery of who is behind it all. We learn more about Sam, her past, her haunting nightmares, and her abilities. We watch as she and Hikuro give into their temptations even while she fears the result. We experience the angst that Zoricah feels when she acknowledges her need to be a huge part of Tardieh’s life and we cheer as more bad guys are expedited straight to hell. I'd love to tell you more of what is in store for you when you read this amazing paranormal romance but then I'd spoil it for you.

If you haven’t started reading this series that features dragons, vampires, shifters, and more, do – please – you’re missing a fabulous tale.

I highly recommend VAMPIRE THIRST by Ella J. Phoenix to anyone who loves paranormal romance, action, fast-paced storylines, and hotter characters than even our favorites from Charlaine Harris. VAMPIRE THIRST gives us extraordinary characters, action that crosses into otherworldly planes, danger and excitement that will thrill and excite, and romance that will steam your glasses or at least the front of your reader. Today happens to be my birthday.  I’m not mentioning that because I want praise or gifts, I was kind of hoping the calendar would skip over it – like a leap year day. "I do. I do." Wedding planner Kate Ashby quietly repeated her calming mantra. Paralyzed in her window seat, she stared at the illuminated fasten seatbelt sign while her hands gripped the metal buckle strap.

Please turn off. Please turn off. They had to be close to cruising altitude. Soon, she'd be able to request a strong drink to knock her out for the duration of this bumpy flight.

She sat still, trying to ignore the terror pulsating through her. Why hadn't she bought sleeping pills before boarding a twelve-hour flight from New York City to Hawaii? Now, that would have been the smart thing to do.

Glancing out the tiny passenger window, she clutched her gold "K" necklace. It was completely irrational to be terrified and she realized the odds of her and her fellow passengers landing safely in Honolulu were more than in her favor. Still, this was her first time flying such a long duration. Departing Manhattan this evening in turbulent thunderstorms had shot her nerves. She was grateful that her boss had sprung for a first class ticket for the long flight.

A loud rattle caused her to grab hold to her armrests. "What was that?" She turned to the stranger sitting next to her. He had short blondish brown hair and was wearing a blue blazer. His face had a nice tan. She had failed to realize that her row mate was incredibly handsome. Usually the person sitting next to her was a grandparent or couldn't speak English. Perhaps he could help her ease her nerves?

 "Um ... I think it's the drink cart. Would you like something?" He folded his Wall Street Journal.

Sexy and smart.

"I'll take a tequila and tonic," he said to the flight attendant.

And likes his drinks strong. This could be fun.
