Unwrapping a Spotlight for APHRODITE'S TEARS by Hannah Fielding

APHRODITE’S TEARS

In ancient Greece, one of the twelve labours of Heracles was to bring back a golden apple from the Garden of Hesperides. To archaeologist Oriel Anderson, joining a team of Greek divers on the island of Helios seems like the golden apple of her dreams.

Yet the dream becomes a nightmare when she meets the devilish owner of the island, Damian Lekkas. In shocked recognition, she is flooded with the memory of a romantic night in a stranger’s arms, six summers ago. A very different man stands before her now, and Oriel senses that the sardonic Greek autocrat is hell-bent on playing a cat and mouse game with her.

As they cross swords and passions mount, Oriel is aware that malevolent eyes watch her from the shadows. Dark rumours are whispered about the Lekkas family. What dangers lie in Helios, a bewitching land where ancient rituals are still enacted to appease the gods, young men risk their lives in the treacherous depths of the Ionian Sea, and the volatile earth can erupt at any moment?

Will Oriel find the hidden treasures she seeks? Or will Damian’s tragic past catch up with them, threatening to engulf them both?

EXCERPT:

Oriel had been sitting on the boulder for a long time, gazing distractedly towards the water, when she became vaguely aware of something moving in the shallows. The moon had by now disappeared behind a bank of cloud, extinguishing the glitter of the waves and the silvery patina on the rocks. The shift in darkness of the night sky made it difficult to see what had rippled the surface of the water. Frogmen night diving, she thought, or the slight undulation of the sea in the warm, salty breeze. She didn’t give it another thought, returning her attention to the winking lights of fishing boats on the horizon – and then, abruptly, he emerged …
It was a man, but not one wearing a wetsuit, fins or diving mask; this one was almost naked, his modesty barely protected by what could only be defined as an apology for a low-rise brief. He was no mere trick of the light. Sleek and glorious, he was suddenly hurtling out of the water, throwing spray off his body like Poseidon rising from the waves.
Oriel’s breath caught in her throat as she watched him, a small frown crinkling her brow. A curious sense of apprehension seeped into her veins. In the near-darkness he looked large, somewhat menacing and disturbingly masculine as he strode through the shallows. There was an air of unquestioned dominance about this man, an arrogant power that expressed itself in the controlled motion of his body as he sauntered on to the beach.
For that fateful minute, she was totally helpless, in the grip of emotions too basic to be controlled by rational thought. Instead of turning to leave quickly, she continued to stare at the stranger who had materialized like a Greek god wading from the depths of the sea. The moon slid into view again, throwing a wash of silver over long muscular legs and narrow hips, wide shoulders and a sculpted torso, all combined in a vibrantly athletic stance. As his approaching form became more discernible, each smooth, fluid curve of muscle, each long line of sinew and bone, and each angular feature glistened with a radiance that stabbed Oriel straight to the heart. Hair as dark as the devil’s soul was dripping wet across his forehead and he lifted his hand to slick it away from his face, the moonlight catching every droplet that glittered like tiny diamonds across his skin.
All at once, Oriel gathered her wits, conscious that she too was only lightly clad, just a muslin sarong covering her bikini. She remembered her mother’s warning that it wasn’t wise for a woman to venture out alone on a deserted beach, and she stood up to hurry back to her hotel, quickly tucking the letter and photograph into her sarong.
Too late! She had barely taken a step before she found herself confronted by the tall, dark figure. Well above the average height of other Greek men, he towered over her, a dark silhouette against the moonlit sky. His eyes gleamed like steel against his deeply tanned skin as his gaze wandered over her and then rested upon her hair, which cascaded heavily down her back, pale and shining as the moon on the water. He had a strong masculine face, rather insolent and somewhat primitive – so much so that despite the tinge of fear fluttering through her, Oriel couldn’t help but feel mesmerized by this Adonis.
‘What brings a beautiful girl to such a deserted place on this enchanting night?’ he asked in English. His obvious Greek accent gave a delightful, smoky edge to his deep voice and sent an involuntary warmth up her spine. Slicking back his wet dark hair once more, he studied her openly. ‘You look like the ocean nymph, Calypso, waiting for Odysseus on your island, ready to bewitch him with your mesmerizing voice.’
Oriel had been too startled, too alarmed, to reply at first. His comment was unexpected, and those glittering grey eyes seemed to hold her prisoner, flickering with amusement and something more intense. It was she who was bewitched.
‘I thought I was alone,’ she murmured, finally finding her voice.
His mouth quirked. ‘So did I.’ He nodded behind him. ‘I dropped anchor back there to come in for an evening swim. It’s been a hot day.’ His eyes returned to her, intent and appraising.
Oriel’s gaze flitted away and caught sight of a small boat, moored next to the rocks to her left. Partially obscured by the craggy ridge that shaped the deserted cove, only the top of the sail was visible, billowing gently in the balmy breeze. She’d been too preoccupied by her brooding thoughts to notice its arrival.
She felt an urge to push past this handsome stranger and run away to the safety of her hotel bedroom, but something about this man had held her there, transfixed. The intriguing power of his personality gripped her imagination. This stranger could have stepped straight out of Homer’s Odyssey.
A silky platinum lock slipped from the scarf Oriel had tied around her head in a band to keep her heavy, tumbling mane in place, and the breeze blew it across her face. He reached out a bronzed hand with tapering long fingers and lightly pushed the strand away, before caressing the length of her hair almost reverently. There was a sultry burn now in the gaze that wandered from her hair to her mouth and then settled on Oriel’s wild doe eyes, which stared back at him. Her stomach curled with instinctive heat.
She felt the impulse to escape, like a fawn fleeing into the brush. Instead, she stood there, pulse racing, her legs trembling as an unfamiliar and exquisite sensation flooded the lower part of her body. It was madness! Never before had this sense of danger – of seduction – hit her with such potency. Surely it was the island air that had gone to her head like an enchanted potion.
The dark waves murmured on the sand, their gently rolling edges lit a luminous blue under the moonlight. Everything was cloaked in unreality and it was as if the two of them were caught in a dream. Oriel sensed that the mysterious stranger before her was also aware of the extraordinary atmosphere that engulfed them.
His fingers were still touching her hair and she backed away. This man was so overwhelming, and she was disoriented. In a sudden, desperate panic, Oriel turned to run, hardly looking where she was going, her bare feet stumbling through the wet sand in the silver-washed half light. Before she had time to register it, her foot came into contact with something hard and she tripped and went sprawling forwards. In the same split second she was jerked sideways by a pair of muscular arms as the Greek god sprang forward and caught hold of her, their bodies colliding in mid-air.
Oriel gave a choked cry. The stranger fell with her, holding her, his body going into a complicated twist just before they hit the sand so that she landed on top of him, the fall softened for her by his body. She lay winded for an instant; then, before she was over the shock, he took her by the shoulders and gently slid her from him sideways. She found herself on her back, staring up at the milky moonlit sky. His bulk arched over her, blotting out the moon with the dark circle of his head, and she looked wildly up at him as the weight of his muscled body pressed down, splaying her against the sand.
‘Don’t!’ she cried out, struggling in his arms. His skin was hot and smooth, and she fought the impulse to relax and let herself melt into him.
The stranger’s eyes glittered and held hers beneath the perfect arc of black eyebrows. ‘You were headed for a nasty fall on that rock, you should look where you’re going.’ His was a face out of Greek tragedy itself. It was so close to hers that Oriel felt his warm breath on her cheek and her pulse quickened; with it came an acute awareness: the needs she had suppressed for years were suddenly rushing to the surface. An aching feeling was invading her lower limbs, a strange weakness. It was magnified a hundredfold when he leapt to his feet and a strong brown hand helped her up, his powerful frame looming over her. His silver eyes skimmed the taut curve of her breasts and she prayed her flimsy bikini top was displaying no signs of her arousal.
He didn’t let go of her hand as his eyes bored into hers. ‘You’re trembling, beautiful Calypso.’
Oriel blinked. He was terrifyingly attractive. She pulled her hand from his, now embarrassed at her clumsy attempt to flee. ‘It’s nothing. Thank you.’
His sensuous lips stretched into a slow smile, uncovering a row of pure white teeth. ‘You must have been here centuries ago, waiting for me on your island.’ Even his speech was theatrical. She found herself returning his smile and entered into the spirit.
‘And who were you?’ she breathed, the question almost catching in her throat; she already knew the answer.
‘Odysseus, of course. Remember? I was shipwrecked and washed up on the shore of this island. You fell in love with me and held me prisoner, but you weaved your magic spell over me with your beautiful long hair, spun from moonbeams, your mesmerizing voice and enticing body, and your manipulative ways.’
Oh, he was daring and arrogant – and irresistible, too. Despite herself, Oriel took up his allusion of the ancient Greek myth and ventured boldly down the same path, perilous though it was. ‘And even though I promised to make you immortal, you refused and wanted to return to Ithaca and your wife.’
Now it was the stranger’s turn to look surprised. He regarded her with amusement. ‘We made love and I was lost for seven years.’
‘But it was me who saved you and built the boat that eventually took you home.’
Finally he laughed, transforming the hardness of his features into an expression that was devastating, making Oriel’s heart leap. Even the sound of his laughter was huskily exotic. ‘Maybe you do not believe in the reincarnation of souls,’ he said. ‘I’ve never really thought about it.’
The images he evoked made Oriel long for him to take her in his arms, to be clasped by those strong hands that had stroked her hair with such gentleness … To lose herself beneath that powerful body again.
Surrounded by such beauty and serenaded by the sea, it was as though they were trapped in time. Maybe it was the lingering adrenaline of her anger at the contents of the letter and her heightened nervous system. Perhaps it was the nature of this deserted place that made everything seem like an alluring fantasy. Or maybe it was simply that this man was unlike any other Oriel had ever met. He was no Odysseus, she decided: that Greek hero had been a mere mortal. Indeed this man seemed the personification of Poseidon himself.
His eyes glinted darkly and pinned her with their glimmering steel, setting her nerves tingling. Had he read her thoughts? Was he aware of the emotions he had stirred up as he plucked at needs deep within her that no one had yet aroused? Oriel’s was dry, her lips parched, and she passed the tip of her tongue over them.
Oh Lord, there was no sense to this!
Shocked at her disturbing reaction, she stepped forward to move past him. ‘I’m sorry … I need to go,’ she murmured, but his fingers caught hold of her wrist. She felt the strength of them, before his thumb brushed sensually against her skin, caressing it, melting her very insides.
‘Don’t break the spell,’ he said faintly, his voice low and hoarse. Close to this man, every sensible instinct told Oriel that she had been right to make a run for it, but as the shifting moonlight caught and held in his irises, she stared into them, profoundly aware of his dark masculine beauty and power. Sometimes it took only a single glance to say everything and, in that moment, she felt her old beliefs crumble inexorably around her. She lowered her eyes and a frisson of emotion ran through her body.

FROM THE AUTHOR:

When I was a child, my governess told me fairy stories. These tales, full of superstition and magic, were my first inspiration, and the warmth and colour they still evoke greatly influence my writing. They were also the experience through which I learned to become a storyteller, as my governess and I had an agreement – whenever she told me a story, I would have to tell her one in return.
As a novelist, I am obsessed by vivid colours, lush landscapes and tales of exotic customs in far-off lands. I can trace much of this back to a dear and long-departed friend of my family, Mr. Chiumbo Wangai, who fascinated me as a teenager with stories of the witch-doctors and magical ceremonies in his native Kenya. When I visited the country myself, I soon fell in love with its beautiful countryside and unforgettable sunsets.
Though I have been telling stories since I was a child, it was only after my children had grown up and my husband and I had turned our family business into a success that I felt I could devote myself to writing full time. After I dug out the various ideas and sketches I had jotted down over the years, I realised how profoundly my travels throughout Europe, the Mediterranean and particularly Africa had burned themselves into my memory. I felt driven to turn them into a novel.
The mystery, magic, heat and passion of Kenya’s landscapes inspired me to use them as the setting for my first novel. Burning Embers, a passionate love story set against the backdrop of the country in 1970. My later travels through Europe provided rich fodder for more stories, including my novels The Echoes of Love, set in Venice and Tuscany, Italy; and the Andalucían Nights trilogy, set in the smouldering heat of Andalucía, Spain.

Unwrapping a Review of DRAGONS WILL FALL by Susannah Scott with #excerpt

Most of you know who have been reading my reviews for the past four years that I am a huge fan of the unusual—paranormal, fantasy, and scifi—well, this is one of the reasons I am a fan of author Susannah Scott. She conjures the most incredible dragons. DRAGONS WILL FALL, book one in the Kingdom Come series—releasing September 14, 2015—shows just how amazing she can write dragons. I am so happy she asked me to read and review for her. Huzzah Susannah!

***eARC provided by author in exchange for an honest and unscripted review

Blurb for DRAGONS WILL FALL:

From Award of Excellence finalist and Angie Award winner, Susannah Scott, comes a new, ancient world series full of exiled magicians, imperiled dragon-shifters, and steamy romance.

An outcast magician with lousy control…
Kas is a half-light with the “gift” of invisibility and healing, but her sometimes deadly magic makes her distrusted by her own people. In an effort to prove her worth and save her people from execution, she infiltrates an enemy castle on a spy mission, but is kidnapped by a powerful intruder. When her only friend is taken hostage as well, Kas has no choice but to embrace her volatile magic and turn to her captor for help.

A dragon-shifter king with an island in revolt...
Cullen is the most powerful dragon of his generation, but strength and cunning won’t stop the mysterious scourge killing his kinsmen. After he steals Kas away to heal them, he’s incensed to find her magic is uncontrollable. Despite her unpredictable powers and non-existent fighting skills, he soon becomes convinced she holds the key to saving the dying dragon race. He’s willing to do anything to gain her cooperation. Even if it means breaking all taboos and seducing the crafty little magician.

With a kingdom of enemies after them both, Kas and Cullen must learn to trust each other before their kingdoms are rendered extinct.

**Due to “open-door” sexual content and dastardly-dude-comeuppance, this book is recommended for mature readers.

My Review:

Kasima McClellan is a half-light who watched her family killed for not surrendering her to a murderous king who wished to wipe out all things magical. Her gift is one of invisibility, once she uses well as a spy in the human world. In an attempt to discover the identity of the spy infiltrating the Half-Light camp, she accidentally kills the king and is taken prisoner by a strange man who seems to be able to see her while she is invisible. She soon discovers, he’s much more than he seems and it was his sense of sight that gave her away to gorgeous and dangerous, Cullen Armati but instead, it was his sense of smell because he’s a dragon.

Cullen wants desperately to find someone to cure his dying dragons. Having already lost too many to this strange sickness, his last hope is a Half-Light healer and without knowing it, he’s caught in the human king’s chambers. She does her best to distract him, trick him, and escape him but when he learns the truth of who she is, he’s quick to transform into his black dragon and steal her away to the island of dragons—Islador. It’s there that Kas learns much about the world in which she’d been living and about those she called friends, and enemies. She also discovers new friends, and love.

DRAGONS WILL FALL by Susannah Scott is an amazing adventure and exploration into a fantasy world filled with half human/magicians, half dragon/magicians, rogue dragons, dangerous and manipulative magicians, and humans who are afraid of all of them while trying to survive and figure out who to trust and not to trust. Kas is unable to trust anyone except her closest friends, and she soon discovers that’s not always possible either. She’s not even sure about trusting herself. Her self-confidence is such that it inhibits her abilities and it isn’t until the dragons build upon that confidence that she discovers her true talents. While on Islador, Kas faces unwarranted hatred, attempts on her life, and danger at every turn but she also learns to trust, in herself, in Cullen, and in new friends. Life might not be easy for a Half-Light but with good friends and love as her support, anything is possible, even falling in love with a dragon.

I highly recommend DRAGONS WILL FALL, book one in the Kingdom Come series by Susannah Scott to anyone who loves a fabulous and different world, action and danger, and if you love dragons, you will thrill in the way Susannah takes us into the dragons' world. I can’t wait for Muriel and Hank’s story…yes, she gives a preview at the end of DRAGONS WILL FALL. Trouble is brewing in WATERS WILL RAGE. XO

Excerpt:
Armati dragged her to the library door, kicked the guard aside, and pulled her into the hallway. No other guards seemed to be coming. If she let him drag her from the castle, she would be lost. Her best chance at escape was now, when he dealt with the humans. Kas turned herself to invisible and wrenched away, but his grip didn't waver.
At the top of the stairs, he paused and spoke directly into her ear. “Behave.”
Behave?
She fought in earnest, kicking and hitting at him all the way down, but only managed to bang her heels on the risers. Armati pulled her past the hearth room to the kitchen. Behind them, a bell rang a single repeated clang, signaling that the castle was under attack.
“Leave, now,” he said as they entered the kitchen. The servants looked at him slack-jawed and fled out the door.
Kas released her hold on her cells, and the hum of transformation zipped along her nerves, allowing her body to become wholly visible. “Let me go,” she said. “Or I'll start screaming and bring the guards.”
His eyes swept from her toes to her face. “You'll scream?” An amused muscle twitched near his mouth. “I'm terrified.” He opened the cellar door and gave her a push downward.
She braced her arms wide on the open door, resisting by holding the doorframe.
Armati brought his face to her ear, and the scrape of his beard abraded the side of her chin. “Get in. Now.” The words puffed along her neck, sending chills down her back.
She rammed her right leg to his groin, but he caught her knee in a tight grip before she made contact. He smiled the slow, taunting smile from the library, and slowly lifted her leg past her waist. She jumped on her left foot to keep her balance.
Armati crowded her so she had to back step down the cellar stairs. He closed the door behind them and followed. Damp earth and stored onions filled her nostrils. Muted light from the kitchen permeated the wooden floorboards above their heads.
“They'll find you.” She composed her voice. “You'll never get away.”
He stalked toward her, and she forced herself not to cower. His eyes dropped to her brown tunic, pants, and boots. “Who are you?”
“I’m no one.”
“Not true,” he said with a sardonic twist of his lips. “You've got a wicked right knee.” He walked closer and she retreated until her back hit the cellar wall. “And magic, so you're either a full Magician or a Half-Light.”
“I am no one,” she repeated.
Without warning, he reached forward and pulled open her shirt.
“Hey!” Buttons scattered to the dirt.
Armati turned her so her chemise pressed to the musty wall. He yanked her woolen shirt off her shoulders and his hands lifted her under shirt from her back. His cursory inspection told her that he wasn't after seduction.
“What are you doing?”
He released her and she flipped around and tugged her clothes together. “You've no markings, and the Magicians aren't prone to leave the mountain. You're a Half-Light.” He gazed at her thoughtfully. “You know where the healer is.”
Kas shook her head. “No, I don't.”
“I can hear your heart beat and smell your emotions.” Armati leaned forward and inhaled deeply. “You're lying.”
She pressed her lips closed and crossed her arms over her ruined shirt. “I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.”
Overhead, boots stomped across the wood floor, sending dirt showering down. Armati stepped closer, crowding her against the wall. The heat of his body leached through the narrow space between them. “Is invisibility all you can do?”
She knew how to be quiet.
Armati held his hands up in mock surrender and stepped back a foot. “I need to talk to your leader.”
“What makes you think I'm not our leader?”
He dragged his gaze from her feet to her face, lingering briefly on her chest. A blush heated her cheeks and she pulled her arms tighter around her torso. “You can't lead people without good boots. Never know when you're going to need to stick one up an ass.”

Unwrapping a Review of GODS AND GLADIATORS by Jaye Shields

Looking for something fabulous to read on a summer afternoon while relaxing or on a rainy evening while summer storms rage outside, the novella, GODS AND GLADIATORS by Jaye Shields will fit the bill perfectly.

***Original copy provided for editing by author and my honest and unscripted review is my own - I would've loved it even if I didn't edit it.

Blurb for GODS AND GLADIATORS:

When the Olympian Gods contest that the Romans aren’t nearly as mighty as they think they are, Ares, the God of War, is the first one to prove it by spending a month as a Roman. Ares arrives in Rome as a Gladiator, thrilled to have a human body in which to kick some ass. His first chance at Gladiator glory is to reenact the slaughter of the Sabines but when Ares spots a beautiful slave with eyes blazing with courage, he refuses to tear through the defenseless prisoners.

Eirana of the Gauls is only one of hundreds of women taken as slaves by the Romans. Weaponless and starved for days, she’s forced into the coliseum to be symbolically massacred. She’s seen the infamous Gladiators in action enough to know there will be no mercy. But then something incredible happens, one Gladiator chooses to protect the defenseless women. He claims to be a God, but he bleeds just like a human.

Eirana is the most incredible being Ares has ever seen. With only a month in the human realm, the God refuses to leave until knowing she is safe. But if he can conquer the Romans keeping her as a slave, will his heart still be able to let her go?

*                 *                  *                 *                 *

The gods on Olympus are unhappy that the humans in the Roman realm have stopped honoring them with worship and celebration so when Eris, the goddess of Chaos offers up a game, Ares, the god of War takes up her challenge to spend one month among the humans to get them to once more worship the gods as they deserve.

Ares descends in human form to battle in the Coliseum, only once there, he discovers more than the Romans depravities of killing helpless women and children, he discovers love.

Eirana, a Gaul prisoner of the Romans strives to survive life beneath the deadly arena, but when a Roman gladiator named Ares saves her life and the lives of the other women, she discovers more than a hero. She encounters a god and falls in love.

GODS AND GLADIATORS by Jaye Shields is an
extraordinary journey through time to a place of danger, helplessness, and brutal savagery, but where love triumphs. This well-written story about unexpected love developing amidst action-filled scenes, which expertly conjure amazing images of battle and destruction, will have you begging for more. The battles come to life before your very eyes, rather than just on the pages of a book. Jaye creates a wonderful romance between a warrior who has only known death, and an innocent woman who has witnessed more death than she should ever in her lifetime. Neither expects to survive yet they surrender their hearts and their bodies to each other at a time when only death may be their future outcome.

I highly recommend this wonderful novella from the author who brought you the thrilling paranormal romances, the Immortals in Alameda Trilogy and the erotic Sex Demon Trilogy. If you love the ancient world, mythology, and romance then you must read GODS AND GLADIATORS by Jaye Shields. I watched this story grow and refine as I assisted her in editing but it was Jaye, and Jaye alone, that brought Ares and Eirana’s story to life.

Unwrapping: Review of A WARRIOR'S DESIRE by Pamela Palmer

A WARRIOR'S DESIRE by Pamela Palmer is the 3rd book in the ESRI Series from Harlequin's Nocturne Books. 288 pages (277 pgs of story) Available in print and ebook format. Release date January 24, 2012  -- that's tomorrow, folks!

BOOK BLURB:
Ex-Navy SEAL Charlie Rand embarks on the most dangerous mission of his career when he dives through the gate into Esria to try to rescue the only person who knows how to seal the gates, the Esrian princess, Ilaria. But it’s his guide and companion, Tarrys, who turns out to be the true revelation. And who ultimately poses the greatest threat of all. To his heart.
            *                                     *                                  *

I have to be totally honest and confess that I have never read any of the Esri series before this one. I am a huge fan of  Ms. Palmer's writing and so when an opportunity to win a copy of this book came along, I took it and was lucky enough to be the one chosen to receive it. I haven't read any Harlequin Romances since the 70's because they had definitely become too 'formulaic' in nature and Avon gave me more diversity in its storylines. Having confessed this, I will say that I might have changed my mind. The Harlequin Nocturne Books are their paranormal romance section and if A WARRIOR'S DESIRE is any indication of what they publish now, I might just have to check out more of their titles. I will definitely be reading the first two of the Esri series and am looking forward to the next and final one, WARRIOR RISING coming in March 2012.

Charlie Rand is an ex-Navy SEAL, and a member of the Sitheen Resistance who are a mere handful of humans who know about the Esri invasion and can hopefully do something about it. Charlie is going on a mission into the magical and foreign world of Esria to rescue the Princess Ilaria, the daughter of the deposed ruler of Esria who had banned travel into the human realm and the enslaving of humans. The Sitheens believe that the princess is the only one who can help them seal the portals for good and save our world from a life of slavery.

Charlie knows that Esri are nearly immortal and that to kill one would mark him for death. Fighting them is going to be one of his greatest challenges. He also knows that one touch from an Esri can possibly enslave him and that he will be lost forever but if the human realm is to be saved from invasion and total enslavement under the Esri, he must not fail. He plans to go alone even as his brother, Harrison, begs him to take the beautiful Marceil, Tarrys, along as a guide. Charlie believes she would only slow him down and having only been recently freed from the slavery of her Esri master, Baleris, that she might be in danger of being captured and enslaved again. So, he is determined to go it alone.

The Esri world is nothing like he imagined even after Kade, a seven foot tall immortal, told him all that he hoped the young warrior would need to know. To pass through the portal, Charlie needs Tarrys help but insists that as soon as he is through that she return to the human realm. Guess what? She doesn't. She follows him until he makes it known that he has known she was there all along. His attraction to her makes him uncomfortable and even though he knows her archery skills are well beyond his own, he doesn't need the added complication of feeling like he needs to protect her. He begs her to return to safety.

Well, all that sort of changes when suddenly it is Tarrys doing the protecting. I love that Pamela took this is in a totally gender-reversal direction with Charlie becoming dependant on Tarrys to guide him and protect him. Even as it becomes clear to him that the petite warrior woman is in love with him, he knows he'll never complete his mission without her help. Charlie Rand doesn't do love. He keeps reminding himself of this even as his feelings for the girl begin to grow into more than just a lustful physical attraction.

A WARRIOR'S DESIRE is fantastical, and spellbinding in its imagery. I very much enjoyed reading it, which didn't take much time either because once you fall into the world of the Esri, you don't want to leave until you see what's around the next bend, or dark passageway in the Crystal Mines as was the case throughout most of the story. Even the fear- inducing Forest of Nightmares is intriguing. But ... I would like to have seen more action and less hormonal worrying on the part of Charlie Rand. I think that as an ex-Navy SEAL, he should have been concentrating more on the mission and less on how attracted he was to Tarrys and how much he didn't want to get involved with her. Considering that he was also sick as a result of an attack by a Black Trimor, his continual musing over how he didn't want to lead the girl on or hurt her feelings seemed a bit overdone. Perhaps this is the result of it being a Harlequin publication ... more romance less action.

But when all is said and done, and thanks to Pamela's excellent writing skills, A WARRIOR'S DESIRE is a wonderful read. It's an imagination teasing journey into a vividly unique yet nightmarish world where danger awaits at every turn. If you enjoy paranormal romance, fantasy in particular, you will thoroughly enjoy A WARRIOR'S DESIRE. I may have thought the concentration on romantic thoughts a bit overdone but it doesn't change the fact that I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I suspect that if you've read the others first, it is even more enjoyable but it does well as a stand alone book.  I highly recommend reading A WARRIOR'S DESIRE.
