Okay, I admit it - I love the men of the Inferno Club created by romance author Gaelen Foley and so when I got a chance to get my hands on an eARC of her newest installment in the series, MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT, I jumped at it and then promptly inhaled it!

Every time I read one of Gaelen Foley’s Inferno Club installments, I think it’s the best one she’s written and even though I still have a special affinity for Rohan, Duke of Warrington, I must say that I am most definitely mad for Beau.

Gaelen’s characters have come to life in MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT in such a way as to endear themselves to you immediately. You desire to shake Carissa and scream at her to stop playing games and tell Beau the truth or you’ll do it for her. Then your heart breaks slowly into pieces when the truth does come out and you share Carissa’s tears and Beau’s shattered ego. But it's the ending, which I won't give away, that brought tears to my eyes even while I was smiling like a fool. By the way, this isn't the end of the series - thank goodness.

In MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT, Gaelen has created a romance that has been brewing for some time even as Beau and Carissa remained blind to it. Their romance arises from folly but is believable for the day even as we giggle at her missteps, busybody nature and getting trapped inside a wall. We are treated to all of the mystery and intrigue that normally surrounds the agents of the Order but get a delightful look at how Beau woos Carissa as a man who is enamored of his bride might do in Regency time. He showers her with bridal gifts that even a modern bride would envy. Gaelen’s research into Regency has struck gold again.

I highly recommend MY SCANDALOUS VISCOUNT by Gaelen Foley if you love romance that will have you giggling with the delightful and playful antics of newlyweds and fast-paced intrigue that will have you wracking your brain to solve and all of the danger that usually accompanies the heroes of the Inferno Club. Unwrapping: Review of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE by Gaelen Foley

First- Thank you to everyone who participated in my little experiment - those who commented admitted that they were not able to accurately choose 'old' from 'new' which proves that maybe Historical Romances haven't changed as much as we thought they had - thank goodness - reading would be very boring if every heroine was a female Dirty Harry and every hero a Gentleman George! Now on to the main event!
This weekend, I inhaled the historical romance novel, MY RUTHLESS PRINCE by Gaelen Foley ... I mean inhaled! I started reading it and didn't want to put it down and almost didn't even when I had to.

In MY RUTHLESS PRINCE, the Earl of Westwood is suspected by his brother warriors of having turned traitor, but Emily Harper knows this is impossible for the man she has loved since childhood—as impossible as a marriage between them could ever be—she, the gamekeeper’s daughter and he, a bold and adventurous nobleman.

Driven by hatred and revenge, Westwood is playing a deadly game of deception, bent on destroying the enemy’s dark conspiracy from the inside, and he’s furious when Emily plunges herself into danger for his sake. I am a huge fan of the Inferno Club and definitely recommend that if you haven't read the first three installments in the series then do and in order, but MY RUTHLESS PRINCE does well enough as a stand-alone, if you choose to read it as such.

Drake Parry, the Earl of Westwood, is by far the most 'tortured' hero I've ever read. He's tortured not only in body but in heart and spirit, too. Having endured horrible physical torture at the hands of his enemies, Drake feels beholden to one of them, James Falkirk, for saving him. So much so that he escapes his Inferno Club brothers who, along with his childhood friend, Emily Harper, are trying help him recover from his ordeal and mend his mind, body and soul. But Drake's misplaced need to protect the old man, Falkirk, is as great as for any of his brother warriors so he escapes to Bavaria and into the hands of those who tortured him, left him a broken man and took nearly all his memory, all but that of Emily. 

Unable to let him be lost to his enemies or hunted down and possibly killed by his own who now think him a traitor, Emily goes after him. She is convinced that she, and she alone, can reach him through his heart; that only she can reach the Drake that she knows and loves and bring him home safely. But Drake has changed and even though she knows the man well, she sees in him a darkness, a willingness to do whatever is asked of him by those who would do him, and her, the most harm. Her own belief in Drake is put to the test and it's only her love for him that keeps her from believing the worst. While Emily works from the inside, the rest of the Inferno Club works dangerously on the outside even as the same questions plague them all. Has Drake truly joined the Prometheans and turned to the darkness to fight against everything he has known and honored since being chosen as a young lad to be raised by the Order? Or will he prove to be their worst enemy?

From the minute you open this book, you're caught up in the struggle to bring Drake home and the mysteries of the Prometheans. The story is fast-paced and filled with action that keeps you on your toes. Gaelen wastes no time with a blossoming romance between Drake and Emily because their relationship has been in place since childhood. Emily has always known that she loves Drake even though their respective stations in life have kept them apart. Instead of watching the pair fall in love, it becomes more about them admitting to the love that's always been there between them. Even while suffering essentially 'Stockholm Syndrome', Drake is torn between his misguided loyalty to James and his need to protect Emily at all costs. It's no wonder poor Drake doesn't seem to know if he's coming or going. I suspect he's going to be out of sorts for quite a while so it's a good thing Emily loves him so and is more patient than most women would be. Possibly even a bit too patient, she might have done well with giving him a good quick kick in the pants.

Speaking of kick in the pants! Gaelen gives us plenty of intrigue, subterfuge and some intense action scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat and holding your breath such as when Emily is put in the precarious position of using her expert archery skills to fulfill a promise and destroy her reason for living. I have to say that it took a lot of courage on Gaelen's part to place her heroine in one of the cruelest, most heart-wrenching moments I've ever read but it worked. I'm not going to spoil your reading by telling you what happens but be prepared to hold your breath and wipe away a lot of tears.

MY RUTHLESS PRINCE is everything you expect from a Gaelen Foley historical romance and more.
Until now MY DANGEROUS DUKE has been my favorite of the Inferno Club. Even though Rohan is still the man I'd like to have come home with me, I have to say that I would easily trade places with Emily to help Drake find his way back to the life he knew and the laughter, camaraderie and brotherhood he shared with his brother warriors.  MY RUTHLESS PRINCE has definitely become my favorite of the series.

If you're looking for action, intrigue and subterfuge, edge-of-the-seat suspense and some very romantic love scenes then MY RUTHLESS PRINCE by Gaelen Foley is the one you want to read.  Published by Avon, an Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers and ON SALE NOW in paperback and ebook format, I Highly Recommend MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. 
In fact, my only question now is ... when are they making it into a movie??!!

Unwrapping: It's a New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone ...It's a New Year, 2012!

It's hard to believe sometimes that we are actually in the 21st Century but now it's actually the year 2012. I think back to a time when the turn of the century seemed so far off that I couldn't even imagine living in it and now we're already this far into it. The years go by faster and faster, I suppose partly because I'm getting older and time seems to pass us by faster as we get older. I'm reminded of the adage 'Time Flies When You're Having Fun' - I suppose that's true in some respects but are we really having so much fun that it's the reason why time speeds us by as we get older? I don't think so ... but it's a nice thought.

Well, with the New Year comes the tradition of making (and breaking) New Year resolutions. Have you ever wondered where that tradition came from? Well, I have so I did a little research.

The tradition of New Year Resolutions can be traced as far back as about 150 B.C. when a mythical king of early Rome named Janus was placed at the head of the calendar. It's from Janus that we get the word January, hence January is the first month of our calendar year.

Janus had two faces, one to look upon past events and the other to look forward to the future.  Janus was the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans sought forgiveness from their enemies by making resolutions to change their ways.  Janus was also the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances which is why the symbol of Janus adorns many doorways throughout Europe and elsewhere in the world.

So every year, as we look back upon the year we are leaving behind, we tend to make resolutions in the hope that it will make the coming year better but how many of us actually keep those resolutions? I know that I try every year to stick to my resolutions but sometimes I think I've already sabotaged myself because I expect more than I can deliver. My resolution for the past two years is to finally finish my 2 (yes, 2) works in progress. I will say that I am absolutely, positively, without a doubt, hopeful that I will finish at least one of them.  ; )

Then there are all those little things that we traditionally do in hopes of making our resolutions stick and we stick to our resolutions. Some folks eat only lasagna on New Year's Day, others it's black-eyed peas and collard greens. I've often wondered if it really made a difference but I'm sure those who follow such traditions will also swear by them.

Throughout the world, there are many different New Year traditions that are supposed to bring good luck to those who practice them. For example, in Greece, a special New Year's bread called Vassilopita or St. Basil's cake is baked (January 1 is also St. Basil's Day in honor of a 4th Century Orthodox Bishop).  A coin is placed inside the cake and when the cake is sliced - the first slice is for the Christ child, the second for the father of the household and the third slice is for the house - if the third slice holds the coin, spring will come early that year.

In Norway, they make a rice pudding and hide one whole almond inside it. The person fortunate enough to get the serving containing the lucky almond is guaranteed wealth in the coming year. 

A Very Famous Kiss in Times Square

Here in the USA, we share kisses and best wishes. Of course, we tend to share kisses whenever the opportunity arises ... a celebration is always better with a kiss!
The kiss shared at the stroke of midnight is derived from the time of masked balls which were very common throughout history in Great Britain and on the Continent.  As is tradition, the masks symbolize evil spirits from the old year and the kiss is the purification of all things bad from the old year so that those things weren't carried over into the New Year.  Much more romantic than the coin or almond in food. I keep thinking of the number of cracked teeth that came about because the lucky person found the coin while chewing.

Perhaps, we Americans just like to romanticize everything and so that's the real reason for that special kiss with someone we fancy, lust after or love - preferably the last one! New Year's wouldn't be New Year's without someone to kiss at midnight! Right?

But if we don't have that kiss at midnight will it bring us bad luck in the coming year? What about couples who are separated by distance, do they fall prey to bad luck in the year ahead because they can't kiss at midnight?  I don't believe they do - although, you have to wonder about the misfortune that has already befallen them by being separated from each other on New Year's Eve. The kiss is sweet, it's romantic and in many cases the beginning of something special which may or may not continue through the year. I've known many a relationship that began with a New Year's Eve midnight kiss and call me romantic but if you're lucky enough to have something special spring from that then you've got all the luck in the world.

Do you have any special New Year traditions that you feel make your coming year luckier, more fortunate, or help you keep those pesky resolutions? 

Well, I've got a simple resolution that even I can manage to keep - read more of my favorite authors and meet some new ones, too.

Unwrapping: Traveling to the Past

My darling hubby gave me PRIDE AND PREJUDICE on Blu-Ray and I couldn't be happier than a pig in mud! I love the book immensely and adore the 2005 version even though it doesn't have Colin Firth as Darcy. My DH knows I can watch that film over and over and never tire of it so he was thoughtful enough to get it for me.  He even came in and joined me while I was watching it the other night.

While watching the movie, he commented that it would be cool to travel back to Jane Austen's time if even for a little while. When I reminded him that there was no toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and bathing wasn't exactly a routine behavior for the times, he quickly changed his mind. I laughed at how quickly the idea lost its appeal once he knew all those things we take for granted wouldn't be there.

While preparing for Christmas, wrapping gifts for 14 homeless kids, baking goodies to share with friends and family, I watched LOST IN AUSTEN which I had recorded when the episodes were re-aired over two days. I had forgotten how strange it would be for a 21st Century woman to be suddenly transported into Regency England. 

My favorite part was when Amanda Price suddenly found herself back in 21st Century London. She found her way home and immediately went to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. Having not been able to properly brush her teeth the entire time she was gone had not left her in a good mood! 
                                                                        
 UGH! Just the idea of using chalk makes me immediately want to rinse my mouth!

Anyway, consequently when her boyfriend commented that her "bum had gotten big", she replied through minty suds rather snarkily, "my bum isn't bigger, it's the dress that makes it look that way!"


And then there was the clothes! Personally, I love the style of dress with its empire waists and Spencer jackets... they may have looked a tad bit chunky in them but they certainly looked elegantly tall, too! But then again, would we really be comfortable in so much cloth with only the occasional bath?  I somehow doubt it.     

So I'm wondering, if you had the opportunity to travel back through time, as Amanda did, would you go and if so, what creature comforts would you bring that you know didn't exist yet? And don't just think about chocolate and how it's sooo much better now!

Gaelen Foley is one of the most talented writers in the Romance genre. Her stories are gripping and so well-researched that the readers may feel as if they are actually there in Regency London. Gaelen is one of those intelligent Romance Writers who write intelligent Romance Novels for intelligent Romance Novel Readers. She's an award-winning author who has written seventeen historical romances which are available in 15 languages.  I wonder if John Grisham can claim that?

Since she's very busy working on her next novel even as her newest release is only now on the shelves, I thank her very much for giving us some of her precious time.  I hope you will join me in welcoming Gaelen here today.

Amy:  Gaelen, thank you so much for joining us, it's such a delight for me to have you here and since you are quite busy, we won't keep you long.
You mentioned in your bio interview that you knew you wanted to write as early as high school. I can relate because that was when I was inspired to write and major in English in college. I began to hone my writing talents with poetry and short stories. What direction did your creative juices take you in the beginning?

Gaelen:  When I was little, I used to write plays for my sisters and cousins and neighborhood kids to act out for our audience of parents and doting grandparents. But my main thing early on (kind of embarrassing!) was actually poetry.

Amy:  LOL! I know what you mean, I thought my poetry was pretty good at the time but when I read it now, omg!
Over the years, you've created quite a library of works. The majority of which are centered around Regency England. I know this is your favorite era in history yet your first published novel was THE PIRATE PRINCE. This wonderful story was actually your fifth completed manuscript, if I'm correct. In regards to the first four, were they Regency Romances and were they ever published or are they still living on a shelf somewhere?

Gaelen:  They were all historicals, but they were all over the map. I had one with a gambler on a Mississippi paddlewheel boat. Another took place in Habsburg Vienna in the late 1700's. My favorite one was a treasure hunt historical with hero and heroine fighting their way into the jungles of Central America searching for some lost Mayan temple. Oh, wow, now that I think of it, one of them actually WAS a contemporary--but it wasn't really a romance. It was kind of like that dreadful 80's movie with Robert Downey Jr., "Less Than Zero." (LOL) I think it was trying to be literary fiction, but that could never work for me because, go figure, I prefer happy endings. The fifth one, I can't remember. I guess it must've been pretty forgettable!!!

Amy:  Well, then I guess that last one is living way back on a shelf somewhere! I actually think some of the others sound very interesting especially the Mayan temple adventure. I hope you'll consider revisiting them someday. 
We all fell madly in love with the Knights, (my particular fave is bad boy, Lucien) and then along came the cousins in the Spice Trilogy, oh my! [fanning myself] Now, we are fully in love with and ensconced in the adventures of the Inferno Club members. When you began the Knight Family Series, did you already see the adventurous and mysterious dealings of the Inferno Club looming on the horizon?

Gaelen:  No, not at all. I was totally focused on one book at a time and didn't really start thinking about what to do next until I had turned in the complete manuscript for the final Spice book, HER EVERY PLEASURE. I took a good long rest after that, then started developing the Inferno Club series. Once I had a proposal together for the Inferno series, we ended up having an auction. I don't normally report my deals to Publisher's Lunch, but a few different houses were interested, which was something I could never have dreamed would happen to me back in my pre-pubbed days. I ended up choosing Avon. I LOVE my editor, Lucia Macro, and can't say enough good about Avon and their extremely supportive publicity dept and sales team. Avon is really good at publishing historical romance, in particular.

Amy:  That's wonderful to know that you think so highly of them for I'm hoping to call myself an Avon author some day. I've been reading Avon romances forever and tend to follow their authors more than other publishers and perhaps now I know why although it something I've always suspected - they have the best authors and strong author loyalty. 

With the release of MY RUTHLESS PRINCE, which is now available for sale, we are pulled into the dangerous world of treachery and deception with Drake and Emily. It sounds dangerous and very exciting! We're all hoping Emily can save Drake from his desire for revenge and from himself. Next up, I understand that it will be Beau and Carissa's turn to encounter their own mysteries and dangers but we'll have to wait until next Fall for that one. How many more members of the Inferno Club do you see emerging to have their stories told?

Gaelen:  Well, Amy, that is the great question ...and you and your blog readers can be the first to know (cuz I haven't yet announced it) that there will be three more books after MY RUTHLESS PRINCE. For those who are following the series, you probably saw Beau's book coming, so that won't be a surprise (Autumn 2012). If you recall, our rakish pal Beau has been worried as hell about his two buddies, Nick and Trevor, who haven't been heard from in months. Here's a hint: They're alive! *g* But all is not well...

Amy:  OMG!! That IS very exciting news and folks, you heard it here first!! I was hoping you would say there would be more ... that is wonderful news indeed!
Gaelen, thank you for your time, I know how busy you are right now and I do so appreciate you coming to visit us. I have but one more question and it's not at all related to any of the above. If you could become any character from any book, who would it be and why?

Gaelen:  Hmm...what a fun question!! Well...I think I would love to become Jane Bennet from Pride & Prejudice, at least for a few days. The reason is that she's SUCH a good, kind, gentle, obedient person. I would love to find out what it feels like to be that sweet and good and demure, lol. I'm much more of a headstrong, passionate Marianne Dashwood by nature, LOL (see Kate Winslet in Sense & Sensibility) Ah well, it's better to admit one's own flaws than have someone else point them out to you, ha ha. If I couldn't be Jane Bennet, then I'd opt for Melanie Wilkes in Gone With The Wind for the same reason. Such a saint! What must that be like?? Unfortunately, I already have plenty in common with Scarlett, lol. What about you? Who would you be? Do tell!

Amy:  I love asking that question because it generally gives us some interesting insight into the person living beneath the surface.  Gaelen, I believe there's some Jane Bennet or Melanie Wilkes in you but I suspect you would soon be bored but then again being like Scarlett or Marianne Dashwood isn't such a bad thing ... they were both romantics, much more than Jane or Melanie.  Thank you again for visiting us today!
