Connie’s Review:

Emma and Sam Martinelli are reading the journal of Emma's ancestor, Emily Embry. They have been working together trying to learn more about Emily and how it all relates to Emma and the home she has inherited. As they read on, they learn the story of Emily and Beau Hawkings, two lovers from the past.

1805

Beau Hawkings is captain of the ship, Belle Femme. He has recently become the new Earl of Parkhurst when his grandfather passed away. After much consideration, Beau has decided to carry on with his life as a ship’s captain. Thus, he will not be marrying the woman his grandfather had chosen for him, nor will he be taking on the mantle of the Earldom. Instead, he has passed it on to his cousin.

Sailing on his ship, the Belle Femme, back to Louisiana, he intercepts a French ship firing on a British vessel. His own ship begins firing on the French ship, crippling it. He then rescues passengers of the British vessel, including Emily Embry, age 19, and her Aunt Isadora, with whom she is traveling to England. Now, Beau must return to England as his ship is too heavy to continue on.

Emily shows her displeasure with Beau for allowing her ship, the Eagle, to sink. Her fury is expressed by her foul mouth. As Beau calms her, she finally apologies and introduces herself. Shocked, he cannot believe that this is the same young woman his grandfather had wanted him to marry.

The story follows Emily and Beau as they reach England where Emily is married to Beau’s cousin, yet he is so handsome all dressed up and looks so much like Beau, who seems to have stolen her heart. But her new husband is so rude to her, she cannot take it and runs away. And that, Readers, is when the cat and mouse game begins.

This is a great saga of two very strong characters who want one another but just cannot seem to get along because their personalities are so alike. The character of Michel, Beau’s best friend, is very well written as well. Come along for a voyage of discovery between Beau and Emily. You might find it beats that cruise you want to take.

Copy provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Excerpt:

Beau withdrew expecting a rejection but when her only response was to widen her eyes in surprise he took his offer as acceptable. His blood flared hot in his veins when he saw her little pink tongue dart out again to moisten her lips. He took the action and her silence as permission so he tightened his grip on her waist and slid his free hand into her hair to cradle her neck before dipping his head to catch her lips beneath his.
Soft lips fluttered beneath his own as if she wanted to say something but was unable to form the words. He moved his lips on hers and reveled in their warm satiny texture. When he touched his tongue to the crease of her lips, she tensed but then relaxed. A moment later, her lips parted. Stifling a smile, he pushed his tongue between her lips and felt her inhalation. She pressed her hands flat against his chest and started to withdraw. He suspected she had never been kissed like this before but when her warm tongue suddenly stroked against his, he knew she liked it. Smiling, he drew back and gazed down at closed eyes, long dark lashes resting gently on flushed cheekbones. When her dark eyes fluttered open, he smiled at her with an arrogant confidence he was sure was unflattering but could not resist.
“I do not think you really wish to leave,” he whispered as his mouth hovered over hers. “Stay, chérie, stay.”
He pressed his hips against her so she knew just how much he desired her to do so. Suddenly, a sharp pain struck his foot. He released her and she shoved him aside. A sharp throbbing was centered over the top of his booted foot. The little vixen had stomped his foot and had done a good job of it.
“You may think all women are your playthings, Captain Hawkings,” Emily exclaimed, anger curling her lips so her tiny white teeth were bared. “I am not!”
“Please, call me Beau, chérie. No one calls me Captain Hawkings,” Beau pleaded even as he reached for her. “Even my men call me Captain Hawke. For you, chérie, I shall make an exception and allow you to call me Beau.”
He smiled down at her even as her brows furrowed as if she had not heard him correctly. His foot throbbed painfully but he kept smiling. He was not about to let her know how her tiny heel had bruised his foot or his ego.
“I think I would prefer to call you Captain Hawkings, thank you very much,” she exclaimed as she planted her fists squarely on her hips and lifted her chin haughtily. “I do not wish to call you anything else, if you do not mind.”
She turned toward the door with a toss of her mahogany curls.
“You may call me whatever you wish, ma chérie,” he answered with glee as he eyed the lovely view of her backside she was presenting him.
“You mean like arrogant bastard?” Emily threw over her shoulder as she moved further through the door.
“My parents were happily married, milady,” he remarked in teasing.
His response stopped her. She turned and glared at him with narrowed angry eyes.
“Captain Hawkings,” Emily began in a slow cautionary tone. “I do have a name by the way. I would prefer you use it instead of any of those ridiculous foreign intimacies which you prefer.”
Beau was impressed with her spirited nature and was unable to resist a smile. “Ah well, since we have not actually been properly introduced and I do not know your full name, I can only assume you wish me to call you Emily which is by far more intimate than any endearments, but if you prefer—”
“I do not prefer any such thing,” she replied with a haughty tone as she lifted her chin defiantly. “My name is Embry, Emily Embry…and you, sir, may call me Miss Embry.”
The name hung in the air even after she disappeared into the dark passageway. He stood looking at the place where she had just been with the name swirling in the air like an annoying insect. Had she stayed, he was sure she would have inquired why he had suddenly paled. Feeling as if he had just been sucker punched in the gut, he felt a shaking surge of hysterical laughter rise up into his chest.
Beau pushed the door closed but failed to notice it had not closed all the way. He staggered toward his seat behind the desk for between her surname bouncing around in his head and the wine in which he had over-indulged the floor seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
Bloody hell! Was this his punishment for escaping his obligation to his grandfather’s wishes? Of all the women to rescue from a sinking ship, had he truly had the misfortune to rescue the one woman he had hope to avoid meeting in the first place? Perhaps it was mere coincidence. Perhaps there are two women named Emily Embry.
Thinking himself a fool, he knew full well there was only one Emily Embry who would be traveling to London to get married. She must be the same Emily Embry whose name he had been looking at for the past six weeks. The same name he had stared at while he decided what to do about the prospect of marrying against his will. How he wished he had never stopped in Ponta Delgada for then he might have missed the message intercepting him there. However, they had no choice but to stop in the Azores for supplies even if they had not decided to change course and sail to England after he learned of his grandfather’s death.
Beau reached the desk. He pushed aside the dishes and linen cloth, pouring himself another glass of wine before seating himself behind the desk. He downed it quickly then began searching the desk’s drawers for the letter and contract which his grandfather’s solicitor had presented him upon arriving at the man’s London office.
“Why does it have to be you, chérie? Such a cheeky firebrand as you, far more suited to be a delectable tumble between the sheets than a wife. Why does it have to be you to whom I am promised in marriage? Shaking his head as if in the hope of changing what he knew was the truth, he searched through the desk drawers for the missive he knew was there.
“You may be a tasty sweet morsel, innocent for sure, but are you worth being tied to forever? I think not. No woman is. No matter how sweet, spirited, and beautiful.”

It's My Birthday and I want you to join me... #Giveaway

Today is my birthday. I don’t celebrate it because I have no one to celebrate it with…except you, my readers. However, birthdays tend to make me think about the past, and the future. Where have I been, where am I going? This year, my birthday is a bit brighter and my thoughts for the future more within reach than ever before. I finally made that amazing plunge into the publishing pool with my first romance novel, SEEKERS OF THE PAST. I hope you’ll all take a chance on me and read it. I think you’ll enjoy it very much as well as the next books to come in the series of the same name.

The story is steeped in secrets from the past, family history, and the possibility of hidden treasure. It also begins a journey for Emma and Sam as they explore family history only to answer some questions while stirring up more. Go here to read an excerpt.

As my thoughts go to that bright spot in this last trip around the sun, I realize that it’s been a year containing another adventure. Over the past several years, I have been researching our family history, tracing both sides back to the old countries. I had managed to trace the family lines back to origins in Germany, France, and Sweden and had assumed the story of my great grandmother’s family coming from Ireland to America was proof positive of our Irish genetics, although questions had arisen as to whether not her father might have come from Scotland rather than Ireland.

This past winter, I took one of those popular DNA tests. I used MyHeritage.com but I’m sure you’ve heard of the others as well—AncestryDNA.com, and 23andMe.com.

My DNA Results:

I have to admit to being surprisingly impressed with the results of my test. It didn’t just say that I was part percentage this country or that, but instead told me the regions where my DNA originated. As you can see from the map showing from where my ancestral roots came and the percentages of those in me, I truly am a mutt. Of course, everyone carries their own separate percentages but the most amazing discovery was that I carried absolutely no Irish origins but instead, carry a large chunk from Scandanavia. I knew about the Swedish origins but since it is well known that the Vikings populated parts of Scotland, I have now have a very good reason to believe that my great-great grandparents most likely came from Scotland rather than Ireland. Either way…it’s a good explanation of my red hair.

I haven’t found any secrets regarding lost treasure or an ancestor who was royalty or a murderer, but it’s been interesting all the same. However, I did discover that my Scottish ancestors’ surname is related to a Norwegian Noble Family name. I’m sure they weren’t nobility but they might have been part of that clan.

Rebuilding the story that is a family’s history is fascinating, exciting, and downright fun. Have you tested your DNA yet? Do you plan to? What would you like to find in your family history that you don’t already know? Oh, what the heck…just try it out and see what exciting and unexpected things pop up. Modern day treasure hunting—just like Sam and Emma in SEEKERS OF THE PAST.

Now…since it is my birthday and my party, so to speak and since I don’t have anyone to share it with, I’d like to invite you to join me in celebration, and it might just be you who receives a gift. I'd love for you to enter the following giveaway for a chance to win a copy of my exciting new romance novel which takes you on a journey to where the past meets the present and love lives forever. Hurry, it's all over at midnight July 7th!

Good Luck and Happy Reading Everyone!

Excerpt:

Upon returning from the Jeep with more supplies, Emma discovered Sam digging dirt away from a fallen tree blocking part of the entrance to the tunnel. She noticed he’d removed his shirt and tossed it over a nearby bush. Dressed only in his denim jeans, which hung enticingly low on his slim hips, his muscles worked beneath smooth skin now shiny from the sweat he’d worked up with his exertion. The sight of his lean, muscular body took Emma’s breath from her for a moment. She stood at the edge of the clearing, holding the gear she’d retrieved from the Jeep. Frozen to the spot, she knew she was staring at him but couldn’t seem to tear her eyes from his broad shoulders, and arms as he worked. Her breathing had become even more ragged the longer she stood there, but she couldn’t seem to regain her thoughts. Even the weight of the gear didn’t seem to bother her anymore. She licked her suddenly dry lips.
As if he sensed her presence, Sam suddenly stopped his work, turned toward her and smiled. He rested his hands on the top of the long handled shovel. She watched his muscles relax in his shoulders and arms. Lifting his right hand, he swiped the back of his arm across his forehead.
“I hope you brought the water with you, kiddo. This is mighty hot work,” Sam said, his voice breathless from the strenuous work.
His words snapped Emma out of her trance. Setting the gear down on the ground near her feet, she reached into a thermal bag and pulled out a jug of cold water. She had made sure to freeze a couple of jugs, and chill the first of many she was sure they’d use. It was important to stay hydrated on any dig site, but even more so in the summer heat. She carried the jug over to Sam and reached it out to him, keeping a full arm’s length from him. Emma didn’t trust herself too close to Sam while he was looking so incredibly sexy.
Sam watched her and his dark brow furrowed. He leaned forward to take the jug. She wondered if she looked as uncomfortable as she felt. When he grinned and let out a small chuckle before taking a long drink of water, she knew he’d realized his state of half undress was making her uncomfortable. She wanted to kick him and herself. She hated still being attracted to him.
“It’s too hot to work with my shirt on. I hope you don’t mind my working without it?” Sam asked with an innocent smirk before lifting the opening of the water jug to his lips once more.
While taking another long drink of water, he wasn’t very neat about it and she felt herself scowl wondering if he was deliberately spilling water out of the sides of his mouth so it trickled down over his bare chest to his tight abdomen, and onto the legs of his jeans. Emma watched every trickle of water as it slid down Sam’s body and hated wanting to lick every drop from his skin. She could feel a flush of heat race over her body starting at her cheeks and rushing right down to that deep place buried between her legs. She watched as he finished quenching his thirst, lowered the jug, and wiped his mouth on the back of his arm. Of course, he did nothing to wipe away the droplets of water, which lingered on the mat of curly dark hair at the center of his broad chest. The drops slid down to travel along the line of hair, which snaked across a washboard belly before disappearing into the top of his jeans hanging entirely too low on chiseled hips. Emma thought her knees were going to buckle.
In an attempt to get her mind off Sam’s body, she turned her attention to the tunnel. “So, Martinelli, do you think this might be the old slave tunnel used by escaping slaves, or not?”
She noticed him watching her and hoped he thought the flush of pink on her cheeks was from carrying the supplies. She also hoped he wouldn’t notice how her voice shook because of her breathlessness when he moved closer to her. She tried not to inhale his masculine scent accentuated by his perspiration.
Lord, help me! If he took her in his arms right this moment, she was sure she would give herself over to him without hesitation.
When he turned his back on her to face the opening of the tunnel, she nearly sighed with relief. He put his hands on his hips, and took a deep breath before exhaling.
“Emma girl, I do believe this is it,” he said, breaking a branch off the fallen tree he’d been working on clearing when she returned.
“I knew it. I just knew it,” Emma exclaimed joining Sam at the opening. Having totally forgotten her discomfort over his state of undress, she came to stand beside him and almost hugged him with the excitement of the find. Discovering something like this was more powerful even than lust. “When do you think we can go in?”

I hope you all will read SEEKERS OF THE PAST and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it for you. I’ve added a sneak peek at book two in the series, FOR THE SAKE OF HONOR, at the end to give you an idea of how this series will proceed. I’m very excited about it, and I hope you will be too.
