Excerpt:

Lina gasped in horror, her hand covering her mouth as bile threatened in her throat. Her wolf had killed animals but never battled a shifter. If watching this horrified her, how was she going to protect Dakota? She stepped back from the door and leaned on the counter. She watched the wolf drag the body toward the back of the yard and disappear behind the utility shed. The wolf reappeared and then sniffed the air. She watched it walk the perimeter of the yard and then look up at the hills behind the property. Was he going to leave her here to investigate further?

She started toward the door to go outside but then she saw the wolf turn back toward the house. He ran across the yard and up the steps. Suddenly, Ramos was standing there as black fur disappeared across his skin. She opened the door and he stepped inside. He was naked and blood smears glistened on his skin and face. “Are you all right?” she exclaimed in a loud whisper even as her gaze traveled over him searching for wounds, but not missing the way his body seemed sculpted out of muscle. He’s gorgeous!

Yes, he is! I want to meet his wolf.

Hush, Wolf!

“I’m all good,” Ramos said moving past her to the sink. “Some scratches, but they’ll heal.” He grabbed a bottle of water and started cleaning blood from his face, hands, and arms.

Lina moved behind him and grabbed a package of wipes. “Here,” she said setting it next to the sink. “These will help.” She moved to stand by the door because if she continued to watch him, she was going to succumb to the temptation to run her hands over that beautiful body.

“He must’ve followed your wolf here. He was going to set up a watch on the porch until dark,” she heard him say. She turned to look at him.

“How do you know that?” she asked.

He looked at her as he scrubbed his face with a wet wipe. “My wolf read his thoughts.”

“You can do that?” she asked with wide eyes.

“Of course…Elysians can read thoughts anytime but as shifters, we can read thoughts when we’re in our animals.”

“Wait…Elysians can read our minds?” When he looked at her strangely and nodded as he slid a wipe over his chest and down his belly, she suddenly understood why Calian and the other Elysians seemed two steps ahead of her all the time. She looked away. Was that how Calian had known her name? And if shifters could read other people’s thoughts while in their animal then that shifter and Elysian had to have heard her thoughts the night before. “I didn’t know that,” she said and moved to sit in the chair he had been sitting in when she came back from hunting. You never told me that, Wolf.

You didn’t ask.

Lina huffed out a breath. What else don’t I know?

I want to meet his wolf.

Stop! I’m not going to let you tangle with his wolf.

I don’t want to fight him. Her wolf seemed to make a cooing sound.
